A great color appointment starts with listening, not mixing.
Walking into the wrong color appointment can change how you feel about your hair for weeks. That’s why we slow down. Before any color hits your hair, we sit with you. We look at photos. We talk about your hair history. We map out a plan that protects your hair and gets you to the look you want.
At Smith Hair Salon, we only use Pravana. It’s a pro color line known for bright pigment, results you can trust, and clean ingredients. Every formula we mix is custom to you. We think about your hair’s past, your skin’s undertone, and your goal. Whether you want a small shift or a full new look, the formula is built just for you. And we save it on file so your next visit picks up right where the last one left off.
From a small shift to a full color refresh.

- Wait 48 to 72 hours before your first wash. This gives your color time to lock in. Skip the gym or wear a shower cap if you have to rinse.
- Use a sulfate free shampoo.Sulfates strip color fast. A clean, sulfate free shampoo is the single biggest thing you can change at home.
- Wash less than you think.Every wash takes a little color with it. Aim for 2 to 3 washes a week and use dry shampoo in between.
- Cool water rinse.Hot water opens the cuticle and lets color slip out. Rinse with cool water at the end of every wash.
- Heat protectant, every time.Heat fades color. Use a heat protectant before any hot tool. No skipping.
- Book a gloss between visits.A toning gloss every 4 to 6 weeks brings tone and shine right back. Read more color trend tips.
Hair color questions, answered.
-
How often should I refresh my hair color?
It depends on the type of color. Solid color needs a root touch up every 4 to 6 weeks. A toner or gloss every 4 to 6 weeks keeps tone bright and shiny. A money piece can stretch 8 to 12 weeks because it grows out softly around the face. Read our guide to long lasting color for more. -
What hair color brand do you use?
We use Pravana professional color. It’s known for bright color, results you can trust, and clean ingredients. We use it for permanent color, demi color, and bright fashion shades. -
Do you offer color correction?
Yes. Color correction always starts with a consultation. We look at your hair, talk about your goals, and build a plan that protects the hair while we fix banding, uneven tone, or a previous color you do not love. A haircut, toning, blow dry, and styling are part of every color correction visit. -
What is the difference between a toner and a full color?
A toner adjusts the tone of your hair to refine warmth, brassiness, or depth. It does not change your overall shade. A full color changes the actual shade and is used for full coverage or a bigger transformation. -
Do you keep my color formula on file?
Yes. We save every client’s color formula at our salons. Your next visit starts faster and your color stays consistent. Your colorist can pull up your formula and pick up right where you left off. -
Should I wash my hair before my color appointment?
Wash your hair the day before, not the day of. A small amount of natural oil on the scalp protects your skin during color. Skip heavy products on color day so your colorist has a clean canvas to work with. -
Can I get a haircut and color on the same day?
Yes. Many clients book a haircut with their color. Plan for a longer visit, usually 2 to 4 hours total. Booking both at the same time saves you a return trip and gives you a fully refreshed look in one visit.
